MACUHO
got its formal start at a January, 1972 meeting which billed itself as
ACUHO Region II
. Held at American University, the first elections were held and the organization began to take shape. That November, the first Annual Conference was held at Lehigh University with 43 institutions represented by 200 delegates.
1973 saw the name of the organization officially become MACUHO. That same year, the MACUHO News began under the leadership of Harold Banks, and the major committee we have today had their start. The first Resident Assistant Conference (now known as the Student Staff Conference) was held in 1975 and is still an annual event. Also in 1975, MACUHO became "international” with the addition of the first members from England. The MACUHO Directory was published for the first time and has since become a major Association resource.
1976 saw the first Director’s Conference, held to bring Chief Housing Officers together for discussions and interaction, a tradition that continues at the Annual Conference. The January, 1976 conference also saw the first Pre-Conference Workshop, which continues now under the name of Professional Development Programs. The late 1970′s and early 1980′s were a time of steady growth in the Association, its membership and activities. In particular, the number of and participation in the various committees gave many members the opportunity for professional growth and service to their colleagues.
In 1983, the Conference Services Committee held its first regional drive-in workshop at Lehigh University. It was also the year that the Handicapped Services/Disability Awareness Committee began, as well as awarding the initial Program Presenters Incentive Award (now referred to as the Best Presentation by a New Professional Award). 1984 turned out to be a banner year for the region, since we hosted both the ACUHO-I Conference (Rutgers University) and the ACUHO-I Annual Conference Services Workshop (Lehigh University). In addition, MACUHO won the first ACUHO-I Volleyball Tournament, a feat repeated many times since.
The current Live-In Staff Conference (formerly called the Resident Director’s Conference) had its beginnings in 1985, billed as a New Professionals Conference co-sponsored by NASPA Region II and MACUHO at Lehigh University. Over the years, the Annual Conference has become the focal point of the Association’s activities, a tribute to the succession of Host and Program Committees that have made these events happen. The other committees have also taken the lead to present timely and educational information to the membership through a combination of drive-in workshops, printed materials and conference sessions.
As MACUHO has evolved, it has become apparent that the leaders in our field in the region, as well as promising new professionals, need to have their accomplishments recognized. As a result, awards have been developed to honor members on an annual basis.
